Asset Class

A term which describes a group of marketplace securities with similar characteristics. For example, the three main asset classes are normally considered to be stocks, bonds and cash equivalents (some investment professionals also include real estate and commodities as types of asset classes). A portfolio may be made up of different types of asset classes. Different types of asset classes represent different risks and return on investment potential.
